Tidbits and Trivialities

Don’t forget to leave a comment to get in the running for one of three copies of The Big Picture. Today’s the last day!

Happy Friday to you. Normally Fridays are joyous events, but when it marks one FINAL week of vacation left, not so. Next Friday I will probably be curled in a ball, muttering incoherently, and eating all the candy bars I can find.

This week a woman saw Jesus in Cheetos. I don’t know why this is so amazing. I have a religious experience every time I eat their orange crunchy goodness. Of course Jesus is in Cheetos. And mini chocolate donuts. And Strawberry Cheesecake ice cream. And those cinnamon pretzels you get at the mall. . .

What is it with Hollywood that everyone is having twins? Now Jerry O’Connell and Rebecca Romijn (the he-she on Ugly Betty) are having twins. I think something is up.

You know the quake that hit L.A. this week? Check this out. Judge Judy does not mess around.

Can I tell you I read a blurb about mandles (candles for men) on Fox News and thought it was for real. CHECK IT OUT and WATCH THE COMMERCIAL.

Did you know Queen Elizabeth’s bloomers sold for nine THOUSAND dollars at an auction recently? I’d take five dollars for mine. I’ll even sign them. Geez, I hope hers were clean.

I read an awesome book this week (when I was supposed to be writing). It’s a middle level book, but I loved it. Great for sporadic waits like in an orthodontist’s office where you had to go back AGAIN to fix some little something that went haywire because Heaven forbid I go a single week without being there. Ahem. I digress. Good book–here it is.

This book, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, will have you laughing out loud. Totally LOL’ing. You will LOL in the doctor’s office. LOL in the car. LOL at the dentist’s. LOL at the DMV, where no one is supposed to ever LOL. In fact, you will LOL your B off.

So I’m totally going to the midnight release party at Barnes and Noble for Breaking Dawn, the fourth and final book in the epic Twilight series. I MUST know if Bella becomes a vamp. Apparently B/N are encouraging everyone to dress in prom or wedding attire. Um. . . no. How about I show up for the marathon wait event freshly showered? That ought to count for something. And I’m sooo taking snacks. Actually I’m just going to make my first ever spoofy video for the website. I’ve recruited some students, and we will see how long it takes to get kicked out make a really great video. Stayed tuned for a Breaking Dawn giveaway!!!

Speaking of good books. . . Below is another synopsis of a great Christian book. Donita K. Paul writes fantasy, and while that is not my cup of tea (apparently unless there are fangs involved), I hear nothing but praises about her books. In fact, on one episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition this year, the kid requested his room be based on her dragon books! How cool is that? So while I haven’t read Dragonlight yet, I’m really excited to see what my students think of it.

BTW, I finished my book! I celebrated by shaving my legs.
Have a great weekend!

She mentors all ages, teaching teenagers and weekly adult writing workshops.

“God must have imprinted ‘teacher’ on me clear down to the bone. I taught in public school, then home schooled my children, and worked in private schools. Now my writing week isn’t very productive unless I include some time with kids.”

Her two grown children make her proud, and her two grandsons make her laugh.

Donita is an award-winning author of the Dragon Keeper Chronicle series including DragonFire and DragonKnight.

When not writing, she is often engaged in mentoring writers of all ages. Donita lives in Colorado Springs, Colorado where she is learning to paint–walls and furniture! Visit her website at www.dragonkeeper.us.

ABOUT THE BOOK
The fantastic land of Amara is recovering from years of war inflicted on its citizens by outside forces–as well as from the spiritual apathy corroding the Amarans’ hearts. With Kale and her father serving as dragon keepers for Paladin, the dragon populace has exploded. It’s a peaceful, exciting time of rebuilding. And yet, an insidious, unseen evil lurks just beneath the surface of the idyllic countryside.

Truth has never been more important, nor so difficult to discern.

As Kale and her father are busy hatching, bonding, and releasing the younger generation of dragons as helpers throughout the kingdom, the light wizard has little time to develop her skills. Her husband, Sir Bardon–despite physical limitations resulting from his bout with the stakes disease–has become a leader, serving on the governing board under Paladin. When Kale and Bardon set aside their daily responsibilities to join meech dragons Regidor and Gilda on a quest to find a hidden meech colony, they encounter sinister forces. Their world is under attack by a secret enemy… can they overcome the ominous peril they can’t even see?

Prepare to experience breathtaking adventure and mind-blowing fantasy as never before in this dazzling, beautifully-crafted conclusion to Donita K. Paul’s popular DragonKeeper Chronicles fantasy series.

DragonLight is a delight, but I wouldn’t expect anything less from the marvelous Donita K. Paul. I heartily recommend her books to all ages who love inspirational fantasy and wonderful creatures. Ms Paul not only supplies imagination and talent, she provides heart and soul. Another winner!”
~KATHRYN MACKEL, author of Boost

“Donita K. Paul is amazing! DragonLight has the allegorical depth to satisfy the most discerning adult seeking spiritual depth, yet it is fun enough to fascinate a child. This book will enthrall, uplift, and if allowed, change lives–as we are gently drawn to realize that each of us is flawed and must have patience with other flawed believers.”
~HANNAH ALEXANDER, author of Double Blind

Oh, yay! I’m first for a change! :) I’ve read Diary of a Wimpy Kid before. It’s terrific! You should get the sequel out, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules. That one’s good too.

The Judge Judy clip was awesome. Can you believe I hadn’t seen it yet? I am soooo out of the loop when it comes to the news. Unless, we’re talking about 44 pound cats because that’s the sort of stuff I *have* to see.

Yeah, on finishing the book! That is so awesome. When are you going to share it with all the people that faithfully read your blog and think that you look a lot like Cindy Crawford (if you squint)? :)

I saw the Judge Judy video on the news when the earthquake first happened. It cracks me up how the judge and audience wastes no time in getting out of the courtroom, yet the defendant and plaintiff stand there during the entire thing! The lighting could have crashed down on their heads and they did nothing!

Congrats on finishing the book! Wish I could say that about my wip, but alas I still have some 1,000,027 words to go.

Can’t wait to see your news on the Breaking Dawn midnight party. I haven’t read any of the saga, but it will be interesting to read your account of the crazy teens dressed like vampires.

I also can’t wait to grab a copy of DragonLight.

    Okay, I’d better stop. Blessings!

Wow. You actually finished. Amen and Hallelujah. I did read Diary of a Wimpy Kid and the Sequel… apparently I read everything. I even used to read the want ads in the newspaper… when I was about 11. I’d be so excited to read them. I really need a hobby… or a bowl of ice cream.

Oh, dear. Don’t feel bad about the mandles. I thought they were real, too. (And now I hope you really did think they were real and weren’t just pulling our legs.)

I read Donita K. Paul’s first dragon book. I thought it was pretty for a Christian fantasy (not that I read a lot of these), but I wasn’t crazy about it. I thought the “symbolism” was a little heavy handed.

Did you know that we (the FLC) can work on Friday the 8th and then not go in on the 18th? So the dilemma is…do we want a short weekend next week and a long weekend the next (to recover from actually knowing who will be in our classes) or do we just want to go full force once we start and not have a long weekend until Labor Day? Hmm…

I just finished Breaking Dawn! You must put up your review when you’ve completed it. It’s not that it was bad but I just didn’t like it as much as the others. It felt like a very different book to me. The writing was good though – and I think it ended well. I’m just not sure how I feel about it yet.

  7. Jenny August 4th, 2008 2:36 pm

I will definitely tell you what I think about book four, Natalie! What I’ve read so far…VERY different. Eeks.

Paula, if I had to work this Friday I think I would hurl myself off the nearest water tower.

Gracie, finish that book! Believe me, if I can finish a book ANYONE can. I’m the biggest procrastinator, non-finisher EVER!

I reviewed DKP’s Dragon series for TitleTrakk, and I agree that they’re excellent. At least, if you can get past her penchant for giving EVERYTHING hard to pronounce names. But otherwise, very good. And I so love the pink fighting clothes. :)
