Cover Confessions, Book Giveaway…But No Haggis

Don’t forget, I’m giving away THREE COPIES (not a stingy one copy!) of Who Made You A Princess by Shelley Adina. You can read the contest details HERE. All ya gotta do is leave a comment about what movie character you’d like to be. So easy! I’m loving the characters you’re picking. Some of them I never would’ve thought about, but find myself totally nodding my head when I read them.

I am recruiting your help again. We are working on the cover for I’m So Sure. I think the cow might be out, but the pig is back in. Here’s a reminder of the book summary.
First, her family is chosen for a reality TV show, then she’s forced to get a part-time job at a feminine hygiene plant. Bella tries to press STOP before she totally loses her cool.

Bella Kirkwood is finally situated in her new hometown, but she’s not ready for the whirlwind of randomness that takes place next. When her stepdad enters a new wrestling reality show, Bella is pulled along for the ride as her life goes on display for all the world to see. When the cameras roll, Bella must solve a prom-queen mystery, deal with her returning ex-boyfriend, and keep her cool as she works alongside the hot but irritating newspaper editor Luke Sullivan.

Who needs TV when you’re living the charmed life?

So tell us the honest to pig truth here. No holding back. What do you like? Dislike? What image-wise makes you want to pick up or avoid the book? Your comments will be passed on, so let me know what you think!

I haven’t gotten to see Harry Potter yet (but oh, I will! I will!), but my friend and fellow writer Natalie Lloyd did, and I LOVED her blog about it. Her writing is so good, it totally gives me an inferiority complex. And if you think her blog is good, you have got to check out her nonfiction book Paperdoll. Fabulous. One of those books you find yourself pulling out quotes and highlighting.

I also like Micah’s blog HERE. I have zero permission to do this (Micah, my sister in Razorbackness, feel free to sue me, but all you’ll get out of me is a mentally disabled cat and a box of Post-Its), but here is a sample. (Backstory: she was flying from Colorado (I believe) to Arkansas, specifically to the tiny airport in Ft. Smith, Arkansas, which has award-winning bathrooms, I kid you not. And they are divine and worthy of any award.)

Prior to Wednesday, June 10, 2009 I had never…

  • Had a plane make an emergency landing in Wichita Falls, TX because the air conditioner was releasing smoke into the cabin.
  • Experienced a loss of cabin pressure while making an emergency landing.
  • Been forced to sit on a plane with no air conditioning for five hours next to a strange man with absolutely no regard for personal leg space or awareness of his halitosis.
  • “Slept” on a cot in Terminal B of the DFW airport.
  • Cried myself to “sleep” on a cot in Terminal B of the DFW airport.
  • Feared that someone might take my life in order to procure the valuables I was sleeping on.
  • Eaten at an airport TGI Fridays six consecutive times. Apparently I’m a stress eater. Jen here: This is a fave
  • Washed my hair in an automatic sink in an airport.
  • Had 5 flights in a row cancelled for no conceivable reason.
  • Paid approximately one-half of my yearly income to rent a car to drive one-way to Fort Smith from Dallas.
  • Completely disregarded a toll booth because I didn’t see it through my tears.
  • Received a checked bag in which every single solitary item was completely soaked and some of it ruined.
  • Been in a verbal and physical altercation with most of the employees of American Airlines.   Jen here again: Nope, this is definitely my favorite.
  • Seriously considered wandering into oncoming traffic.

However, thanks to American Airlines, I can now say that I’ve done each of these things.

You have got to check out the blog to read the hilarious rest of that, which includes a scary stained cot and one horrible night. And Micah, sorry for laughing at your horrible experience, but reading that pretty much gave me enough entertainment for the week.

Man, I love blogs. Probably too much, according to the lack of things I’ve accomplished this summer.

So about a month ago I went to Ireland and Scotland. I had an amazing time. I loved both, but I think I could live in Ireland. Along the trip, I took some very artsy, intellectual photos that demonstrates the beauty and poetry of both places. I thought I’d share my finds.

First of all, I read an article last week that said 1/2 shaved heads are “in” for some of the Hollywood elite, like Posh. I disagree, but whatever. Apparently this woman in Edinburgh, Scotland read the same article!

So I like museums, and we saw some great ones. But wax statues have always freaked me out just a bit. This guys looks fairly normal.
P1030348
Until we zoom in to those teeth…
P1030351
Niiiice.

Here’s another scary thing I found:
P1030254
Keds. Lots and lots of Keds. Mostly on men, which I have yet to reconcile how I feel about that one, but the high top Keds? Right up there with skanky wax teeth that look like they’ve seen too much wax Skoal.

Pubs are everywhere in Ireland and Scotland. I loved them. In Ireland they are where everyone eats, and they have excellent food. It wasn’t like Cheers or Circle of Friends or anything. And Gerard Butler didn’t wander in and join us. Here one:

P1030504
Jenny Ha’s. Yes, she does. A lot. Especially at touristy outfits like this:
P1020897
Now, I am no fashion expert, believe me. But this outfit seems to need some accessories. Like fishing poles.

Here’s my friend Leslie checking out the dogs at Bunratty Castle. Never Ending Story anyone?
P1020924

Also at Bunratty Castle, we toured the extensive grounds, which included an old school house.

P1020933
This is one half of the space a teacher would use to educate over 80 students. At once. I have a feeling come June, they’d just role out the teacher’s dead body and go out and hire a fresh replacement.

Taylor Swift and all these girls think they are so trendy with their strange forehead bands. Yeah, well, girl, you aren’t trendy. In fact, you’re 1330.
P1020963

That’s probably enough amazing shots today. I don’t want to overwhelm you with the beauty of Ireland and Scotland and my deep, intellectual interpretation of the two countries. But stay tuned for more pictures like this one I like to call “Hey, Friend, Remember That Time You Tried to Blow Up My Hand?”
P1020487

Be sure and leave a comment about what movie character you’d be for a chance to win one of three copies of the YA book Who Made You a Princess. You have until Sunday evening, and the winners will be announced Monday. AND most definitely chime in on the covers for I’m So Sure. I appreciate the help!

Love the cover with the pig in High Heels. You could always ad a wreslers outfit on the pig. LOL

  2. C.J. Darlington July 17th, 2009 1:48 pm

Okay, I’m going with #2. I think the pig looks awfully cute in those shoes!

  3. Shannon July 17th, 2009 1:48 pm

I like cover option #1. The pig in the shoes just seems like a little too much to me.

The rest of your post made me laugh. I’ve got to go read Micah’s blog now…

  4. Hope Chastain July 17th, 2009 1:52 pm

I’d be Marian Ravenwood in the two Indiana Jones movies. And, yes, I realize she wasn’t a princess. If I had to be a movie princess, I’d be Buttercup in The Princess Bride. :-)

  5. Bethany Ellis July 17th, 2009 1:52 pm

I like option 1; but the cow is my favorite :)

  6. Hope Chastain July 17th, 2009 1:53 pm

PS Both piggy covers are good… If you have to, you can close your eyes and throw darts…

  7. Colene July 17th, 2009 1:55 pm

i like pig in shoes myself very cute and made me chuckle. animals in people cloths=classic giggles. but the first look at both made me think “empty.” like…lots of pink empty space.

  8. Colene July 17th, 2009 1:56 pm

ok. looked a third time and definitely pig in shoes. and the space issue, not an issue the second and third look. i donno. dont ask. its perfect lol.

  9. Krista Phillips July 17th, 2009 2:06 pm

#2:-) And LOVED all the pictures! TOO FUNNY!

  10. Sherry July 17th, 2009 2:08 pm

I pick pig cover #1, the heels are just a tad too much, me thinks!

Oh, and if i were a movie princess i’d be Ella, from Ella enchanted. I <3 anne hathaway!

  11. Kristin Barry July 17th, 2009 2:08 pm

    HI Jenny,
Just finished reading all your books and can’t wait for the next one. I like cover #1 the best. Not sure the pig in high heels is a good look for him/her. As far as a movie character, I’d be Dory from “Finding Nemo”, because raising 3 kids has sucked all my brain cells out, and I often find myself wandering around the house aimlessly humming, “Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming.” Like Dory, my memory is in the toilet. Can’t remember what I did last month, let alone last night. Thanks for keeping me laughing with your wonderful books! By the way, I love Mad Maxine!!!

  12. Tiffany July 17th, 2009 2:52 pm

    Hey Jenny,
Well I love shoes so if I had to pick I would choose the one in heels – can you tell me how the pig is going to play into this story? Sort of reminds me of Charlotte’s Web a little so I was just wondering if Bella is going to get a pig in place of her cat?

  13. hannah July 17th, 2009 3:21 pm

I really liked the pig in the high heels, it makes the cover look more like a a girly-girl cover. like bella. the pig in the crown isn’t as fashionable. so I think the high heels.

  14. Sheila July 17th, 2009 3:27 pm

okay, I hate to be a NAYSAYER… but does the book even HAVE a pig? The pig in heels just makes it look like one of those books where someone turns into a pig.. which makes me “So not interested”!

  15. Sarah July 17th, 2009 3:34 pm

I prefer Option 2 but to be honest, I miss the cow – creepy tongue and all.
On the other hand, I’m sure with the fall-out pigs have suffered with H1N1 and all, that their entire swine family is grateful for the promotion. So if you look at it that way…

Um, anyway, I worry I wouldn’t be able to tell the books apart without actually reading the titles (and that’s SUCH a hardship).
    But it is definitely cute!

  16. Alexandra July 17th, 2009 3:34 pm

So book one had a pig on the cover but no pig in the book! Is there really a pig this time? Will the mystery of the pig finally be solved? if you HAVE to go with a pig, pick the first one. The pig in shoes is taking things a little far.

  17. Lesley July 17th, 2009 4:01 pm

I’ll have to go with option #1–but partially because I just don’t like those shoes. :^) Seriously, though, I think the focus needs to be on either the tiara or the shoes, but not both.

  18. hannah July 17th, 2009 6:24 pm

i would totally pick option two without the tiara. or the licking cow. either is fine.

airlines are wierd. on a non-stop flight to Germany, they told us that the ETA was 30 minuets. which isn’t that long compared to nine hours of sitting on your butt. THEN they extended it to an hour and 15 minuets. that sorta thing makes me mad

sounds like your flight wasn’t to enjoyable either. ours had movies.

  19. Erin July 17th, 2009 7:44 pm

I saw Harry Potter yesterday, and it was incredible. It and the first one are now my two favorite in the movie series (I thought movies four and five were VERY so-so…)

I vote for Shoeless Joe…I mean pig. Not quite getting why you keep going with pigs when the cow is more important in the story, but…whatever! And as awesomely talented as you are, I’m sure you added something with a pig that will leave me in stitches.

Last thought…haggis….ewwwwwwww. Love the British accent, but CANNOT figure out the draw behind that particular dish. But then again, we eat fried pork skin (but NOT from any pig savvy enough to wear a tiara!)

  20. Hannah July 17th, 2009 7:48 pm

    Option number one. Hands down.

Loved your pics about Scotland (t’was wondering when you’d show them). Taylor Swift totally needs to be brought up to date about the antiquity of headbands. And seeing your name on a pub — right up there with gettin’ it on a book. :)

Micah’s blog was hilarious! Thanks for the tip — I’m addicted to funny blogs, too.

  21. Erin July 17th, 2009 8:06 pm

Oooops! I just edited my own comment (belatedly). I DO realize that you don’t make the choice on covers – that’s the publisher’s choice, right? So THEY’RE the ones that are obsessed with porcine photography! :-)

  22. Nicole P. July 17th, 2009 8:22 pm

Hi! Is it too late to enter the book drawing? Because I would definitely be Lucy from The Chronicles of Narnia. “If you were any braver, you’d be a lioness.” :) I want a big shaggy lion to tell me that too.

I think I prefer cover number 1, but the large pink space sort of intimidates me. I liked the former cow too, because it helped differentiate between “So Not Happening” and “I’m So Sure.” But either way, “I’m so sure” it’ll turn out beautiful. :)

  23. Renee G July 17th, 2009 9:17 pm

I’ve got to say I’ve always identified with Hermione Granger in the Potter movies.
    rsgrandinetti@yahoo.com

As for the covers — I’d go with option 2, but I think they’re both cute.

  24. Robyn July 17th, 2009 9:32 pm

hi! I also think that both the shoes and the tiara on the pig is a bit much. If you have to stick with the pig, maybe just the shoes or just the tiara.

But, I do think too that the books look super duper too similar with the pig. What I liked about the cow cover was that that black and white cow really made the cover pop because of the colour contrast. The little piggy and the pinky purpley space is a little too much of the same colour I think. So maybe a new animal? Or a barn?

And I have tried for so long to think about a movie character, but I have to copy and be Lucy from Narnia. I would be Susan, but since she gets too involved in make up and boys and doesn’t get to go to Narnia as much, Lucy it is!

  25. Holly July 17th, 2009 10:02 pm

What happened to the cow? So, I am guessing since you are changing the cover to a pig (heels or no heels) you must be incorporating some kind of pig wrestling into the book…..am I right? Why else would you put a pig on there for?

  26. Rose Red July 18th, 2009 4:44 am

Yes, definitely Cover 2–the pig must have footwear!

For a day I would gladly be Annie Hall in the old Woody Allen movie of the same name!

  27. christa July 18th, 2009 9:12 am

    Cover 2.

The airport story…I’m not sure I could’ve survived to write about it.

  28. Heather aka Dynamic Uno July 18th, 2009 9:42 am

The pig in option 1 looks like it has a leg disability since it onl;y has one leg. Definitely NOT my favorite. Option 2 is good–the addition of the high heels is a cute idea, but it needs a little something more–maybe a cape since it’s the little kid’s pig and a movie camera since they’re on a reality show?

Also the writing of the title is too large on both books. I realize that they’re trying to fill empty space, which is the first clue that there needs to be more. I’m still in favor of the cow since the pig was on the first one–especially since the cow played a bigger role in the book. Does the pig get to shine more in this one? Just a few thoughts…

Love the shaved head pic and the headband pic. Maybe they should be combined for a new style–especially with the “gone fishin’” look. It could sweep a whole generation. :)

  29. Faith July 18th, 2009 11:04 am

I like the second one best… she shoes have it!

  30. Micah July 18th, 2009 2:30 pm

Thanks for linking to my blog, Jenny. For the record, I would never, ever sue a fellow Razorback! I had to fly into Ft. Smith again this weekend and I’m happy to report that both flights were without incident.

I like cover option 2, as well. Have a great weekend!

  31. Melodie July 19th, 2009 12:18 pm

I like number 1 best…the shoes are just too much. But I still think I liked the cow better!

  32. Melodie July 19th, 2009 12:20 pm

Ohh, and I forgot to mention (other than that your pics of Europe are extremely cool) that I think you’ve got to be careful with the mysterious pig on the cover of your book, because if you do a second book with a pig on it, you’ll be sort of design-edly obligated to make all the covers have pigs on them. I can totally picture number 2 with a pig, and number 3 with…a chicken, or a horse or something.

  33. Amy July 19th, 2009 1:41 pm

I miss the cow. The pig is super cute, but the cow was awesometastical. Whatever you choose, though, I will still read the book! :]

  34. Lauren July 20th, 2009 11:21 am

I really like the pig in high heels! It signifies that she should be prom queen! Is the pig a she…?

  35. lydia July 22nd, 2009 1:06 pm

I think u should have the pig and the heels
