Pop Quiz!!!

flowers TNEL

A few thank yous are in order. Thank you to my thoughtful publisher Thomas Nelson for sending me lovely roses for the Carol Award wins. They were beautiful and totally spruced up my week. (Side note: They're sitting next to a display I call: Stuff From My Last Beach Trip That's Supposed To Look Chic, Like That One Girl's Decorating Blog I Always Read But Never Understand.)

Thank you to author Julie Garmon for her post on Girls, God, and the Good Life for making me feel better about my technical malfunctions during one of my ACFW presentations. If you're a teen, definitely pop in at GGGL daily for their awesome and encouraging posts.

In the ACFW class I taught on YA lit and Millennials, I started the class off with a quiz. Because I'm a teacher. It's all we know. (I tried to give one lady a detention slip, but she wasn't having anything to do with it.)  I wanted the group to think about if they really knew their audience. I help judge the ACFW Genesis contest (which you totally need to enter if you're an aspiring writer. BEST money you'll spend. Cheapest feedback you'll ever get.) and one of the commonalities I see is writers who don't read YA or have a good grip on teens.  So…I thought we'd see how YOU would do. Are you ready? Got your thinking cap on? Got your pencils sharpened? Here we go…and no fair looking up the answers.

1. Amy Juergens is a character on what TV show?
2. “Speidi” refers to whom or what?
3. Who is Master Chief?
4. Name one Lil Wayne song. (Confession: I had to look this one up. But I could pick him out of a lineup.)
5. What is Bieber Fever? (And is there any cure?)
6. Name two characters from Gossip Girl (the series or TV show)
7. Describe the premise of any of the Saw movies. (I offered extra points for those willing to act out a scene, mime-style.)
8. What is the occupation of Bella from Twilight?
9. If you caught a teen on a Pro-Ana site, would that be good or bad?
10. What does this mean: Team Gale or Team Peeta (I KNOW you're gonna get that one!)
11. Name one Lady GaGa song. (You can do this one. Focus…)
12. What is the difference between Goth and Emo?
13. Who is Alex Ryder?
14. Which is not a real band?
a. Thirty seconds to Mars      b. Cobra Starship      c. Death Cab for Cutie      d. Tastes Like Kevin Bacon     e. I Wrestled a Bear Once

Okay, you're done! Now after you have all your answers you can go to the Mighty Google and see how many you got right. Then leave me a comment and tell me how you did. I can't wait to be impressed!

Ha. I am woefully out of touch with teenagers, even though I’m only 19. It’s a good thing I don’t write YA, because I only knew the answer to one question. Yes, one. But I’m okay with the fact that I should have been born in the 40s. =)

By the way, I sent you my address through the “contact me” form on your site…hope that was okay! I wasn’t sure how else to do it. =)

Mary @ Giving Up on Perfect - October 4, 2010

I feel so OLD now!!! (And I’m not, really!) But I only knew the answers to a few of your quiz questions.

On another note, I finished reading So Not Happening over the weekend. And I’m a little sad to tell you I spent the last half of the book trying to decide who should play Luke in the movie version. Is that weird? (P.S. I liked it.) 🙂

vanessa - October 4, 2010

Haha! I’m a teenager, and I knew the answer to a grand total of ONE question! Well, I suppose I don’t really count because I’m not into Twilight, Justin Beiber, and Lady Gaga. And the other things I had never heard of in my life. 🙂

Erin McFarland - October 4, 2010

Woot! I got 6 of em’! That’s still an F, but based on the comments above, I think I’m setting the curve 😉 hee hee
I would have never guessed “I Wrestled A Bear Once” is a real band.

Katie P. - October 4, 2010

I have a totally random question, but I was wondering if you were going to write a 4th book in Charmed book series. So… will you? 🙂

Deborah - October 4, 2010

i got an 8 and a half. i say half because I knew Bella was a student but forgot that she worked at the sporting goods store. i’m horrible with recent music questions. i listen to the Beatles. my music hey day was 1999-2001. when i was actually in high school lol.

Catrina - October 4, 2010

I’m 16 and i only know the answers to 3 questions… I think thats sad.

Nicole O'Dell - October 4, 2010

I only knew a couple, but I asked my daughter and she only knew a couple too. Phew…not ALL teens are nuts! 😉

Ps, we’re camping out this weekend in desperate hopes of being one of the lucky few to get Tastes Like Kevin Bacon tickets!

Katie - October 4, 2010

Ok…here goes.

4) Lollipop. confession: I’m fifteen and I’ve never heard a Lil Wayne song.
5) Bieber Fever; noun: a feeling of love or admiration, specifically felt towards the newest pop star, Justin Bieber. Sadly, there is no cure.
10) THE HUNGER GAMES!!!! Ummmm, so I’ve waited, and waited, and waited for my library to get them. I’m on the waiting list for Mockingjay now…number 16.
11) Telephone…Bad Romance…Just Dance…Paparazzi…
13) The main character in a series of books mainly for boys, but, sadly, I have read them.
14) hahaha, uh, D? or E.

Thanks for making me feel like a terrible teenager, Jenny!! 🙂 It’s sad how many of these I didn’t know.

Selina R. Gonzalez - October 4, 2010

I’m a teen, and I only got 4.5, lol. Stereotyping… 😉

Jenny B Jones - October 4, 2010

Aw, don’t let it get you down, guys!
But Deborah, if I had a million dollar prize, you’d be in first place…

Tracy - October 4, 2010

Sadly I knew only one…#9. I’ve known I’m getting old, but this just proves it. *sigh*

In my defense, I now have two teenaged daughters and neither of them could answer many more than I did and I don’t think they’d be able to answer the ONE that I did!

Lynette Eason - October 4, 2010

Oh boy. Not many. And I have an almost 12 year old. Guess I better get in touch with my inner teen or I’m gonna so be “in over my head” when it come to parenting, aren’t I?

Hehe. Sorry, couldn’t resist.

ashley - October 4, 2010

I am fifteen, and I epically failed this quiz.

Mattie - October 4, 2010

I think I failed 🙁 but a 6 out of 14 isn’t that bad… Well not as it could’ve been 🙂

Mattie - October 4, 2010

Oops. I meant not as bad as it could’ve been 🙂

Bethany Ellis - October 5, 2010

I’m a teen.

And I got 3.

Moriah - October 5, 2010

I am fifteen and I knew only one of these, possibly too. Most of them I had absolutely no idea… thankfully it looks like pretty much everybody else on here is in the same boat.

SHAR MACLAREN - October 5, 2010

I am totally OUT OF IT! Can I even say ‘out of it’ – or is that too 80s? Okay, I SUCK.

Deborah - October 5, 2010

Hah thanks Jenny. However I would pay a million dollars not to know who Justin Bieber was.

(No Jersey Shore questions???? So many questions just from that alone lol)

Macy - October 5, 2010

I am a teen and only got three. This made me sad. :'(

Colene - October 5, 2010

umm..i know half. So this makes me feel half old. Thanks. But a lot are totally YA book oriented so Score!

Maddy - October 5, 2010

Oh this is sad…..I only got 2 of those questions right – and I am a teenager! I’m 14. But I have always been a little different than most kids/teens my age in what I listen to and watch:)

Samantha - October 5, 2010

OK, I got 3 and that seems to be the average. I have heard of twilight and the saw movies and gossip girl but have never read/watched them. I totally know who Master Chief is but only because a friend of mine is completely obsessed with all things Halo. I guessed what Bieber Fever was (totally Ew, btw he sings like a young girl and looks the part too) And I knew one (Note: and only because I have heard it on the radio. I’m totally NOT a fan of Lady Gaga) Lady Gaga song; Bad Romance.
I’m 16 and I am so glad I don’t fit into the stereotypes of the 21st century teen. I like to go against the flow of the norm and be different then what everyone expectsme to be. (Currently I have glow-in-the-dark pumpkins painted on my finger nails and it makes me excited when I have to go into a dark room so I can see them 😉 )
I second Deborah’s question/plea; Will there be a fourth Charmed Life book? And I also wonder (like the second poster, Mary)who is worthy enough to play a character as amazing and hot as Luke. I stayed up until 3am last night because I could not put down the 3rd Charmed Life. (Note: his was my fourth time reading through the series) Please write more about my favorite fictional characters Bella and Luke. 🙂 Thanks so much Jenny. You’re my favorite author!

ashley - October 6, 2010

psssh. i didnt even try bc i am too awesome at this quiz. but i will say that someone we both know used a quote from a pro-ana site in reference to his or herself and I quickly had to be like “oh no you din-it!!!” bc that person REALLY didnt know better.

Jenny B Jones - October 6, 2010

LOVE all the comments. And Ashley, knowing you, you WOULD have aced it.

And no to the fourth Charmed Life book, but I love it that you asked. : )

And you guys didn’t fail. You just totally SUCCEEDED at questions that weren’t on there.

Megan - October 6, 2010

i am a 14 year old girl and i only got 1 right….. how sad is that? and it was the lady gaga one…. sad face 🙁

lillian - October 7, 2010

I noticed the question was “how well do you teenagers?”
is teenagers a verb or something? well i that case, i teenager everyday. 🙂

Allison - October 12, 2010

1) Secret Life…. *gag*
2) hmmm… i’m thinking a couple from the hills?
3) No idea.
4) Right Above it… Ugh hate his music.
5) There is no cure for Bieber Fever!! And its the complete obsession with Justin Bieber… Most of the time obsessed tween girls who have no taste in music. They wear his t-shirts, know every word to every song, have posters of him everywhere, plan to marry him, and would cry and/or faint if they ever attended his concert.
6) Blair Waldorf and Serena…
7) Ha! I’m too much of a baby to even watch that…
8) She goes to school and works at that sport store….
9)Hmmmm…. Don’t know this one actually…
10) The hunger gamesssss!
11) Telephone
12) Well emos are a bunch of depressed teens that usually harm themselves (ie cutting), and they hate their lives. They wear skinny, band tshirts… etc. Of course this is a just a stereotype. So don’t walk up to someone in the mall in skinny jeans and try and talk to them about cutting because not all “emos” are like that. 😛 And goths well one word can some them up. Black. Head to toe dressed in black.
13) Well Alex RIDER is a teenage spy from books… Haven’t read them… but maybe there is an alex RYDER i don’t know about.
14) Tastes like Kevin Bacon.

Couldn’t answer 3! So if I got the others right it’d have 11!! Well considering I am a teenager I guess I know teenagers… hahahaha
