Cats, Kanye, and Cranky Old Ladies

Let’s do a contest.
Prize: one copy of Just Between You and Me

Challenge: Answer the following question as presented to my students today: What was your favorite cartoon as a young child? Mine was Scooby Doo, hands down. I especially loved it when they had guest stars like Don Knotts or the Harlem Globe Trotters. My soon-to-be four-year old niece watches Scooby religiously and can quote it in all sorts of hilarious ways.  So what about you? You have until Friday at midnight to leave a comment with your answer. I’ll announce the winner next Monday.

Okay, so two words.
Kanye. West.
What a jerk. How miserable he must be to act like he did on the VMAs. And then to interrupt our president too? Uncalled for!

If you didn’t watch or read the news, Beyonce gave up her own acceptance speech time for Taylor to have a redux. Beyonce is classy, y’all. Just classy. All the single ladies! All the single ladies! Put’cha hands up! But if I was Taylor’s Swift’s “people,” I’d be wanting to know who let Kanye on stage in the first place. Because they wouldn’t have let any random fan up there. They had to have allowed this. Not something a 17 year old girl needs to put up with. I think actress Kat Dennings sums it up best. “I’m throwing away my Kanye glasses. They were eight bucks, so no skin off my apple.”

I posted on Facebook that my mom would’ve had Kanye straightened out in five seconds. One FB friend had this to say:
“Girl, my mamma would have thrown a shoe from the audience, hit him in the head, and made him bring it back to her.”

Another said: “What would Madea have done?  I would have loved to have seen that!”

Anyone watch any of the new fall premieres? I kind of liked Vampire Diaries. I only watched half of it, so my opinion isn’t worth much. But I would put the lead actress in the Twilight movies any day. What I didn’t like was the sponsorship of the show. The commercials were basically like, “Hi, I’m Satan. Would you like to take a look at murder, screaming, paranoia, scary cult images, and various other cavities of hell?” Um. . .no. No I wouldn’t. Where’s a good maxipad commercial when you need one? Seriously EVERY SINGLE COMMERCIAL was about a scary movie or a scary show. Creeped me out.

Okay, so my grandmother is now staying at an assisted living facility. And there’s a cat there. And this cat has kittens. My mom said, “You have to see these kittens. They climb up a tree and get on the roof–where they live.” And I’m like NO WAY. Cats don’t live on roofs!”

Here’s the tree.
P1030890

Here’s the roof.
P1030892

And here’s who lives there.
P1030885

Brace yourself for the unfiltered cuteness.
P1030889

CAN YOU BELIEVE how cute that thing is? I mean, seriously. Every time I look at that picture . . .Man, I love baby animals! The kitties (there are three) are wild. And that would explain why they aren’t all living with me. Thank God I haven’t caved and staged a full scale rescue and brought them home. I have a friend whose job right now is just to remind me that I do not need another cat. I do not need another CAT!!!! (But look at that face. And that’s not even the cutest one…I DO  NOT NEED ANOTHER CAT!!!)

I had quite the busy weekend. Friday night I saw I Can Do Bad All By Myself.  I liked it a lot. GO see it! Reviewers say that Tyler Perry’s movies are formulaic and all the same. And in a sense, they are. But this one to me was different in a good way. All of his movies have a faith message, but this one was so much more natural. Usually they are a little, um, much. But I’m so glad to see it coming out of Hollywood, I don’t care how corny it is. But this one was better. There are a few moments where I had to look behind me to see if church was about to break out. That good. If I ever have a movie, I’m writing Mary J. Blige in for sure. I don’t care if the movie is “Land of Only Men,” Mary J. is getting a part. I love to hear her sing. And one of the Wynans had a part as a pastor. And I got chills during his song. As for the storyline, it was okay. I really enjoyed it until the last ten minutes when it got tied up in this nice “HAPPY ENDING” bow that came out of nowhere. But it’s so worth it–so go see it. You could tell everyone in the theater really liked it. Did I mention Mary J. Blige is in it…? The soundtrack isn’t available yet (if ever?), but here’s the theme song (start at :16)

It also has Gladys Knight in it. It’s always good to see Gladys, though I prefer her with her Pips. She sings as well. Because what church woman doesn’t get up and sing an impromptu song in a bar? When it comes to Gladys, I’m a traditionalist. This is still my favorite song of hers:

A soopah stah, but he didn’t get fah. That is good stuff. You never saw Gladys or the Pips pulling any Kanye psycho business. And of course Madea was hilarious. Like 100 percent of what she did/said was hilarious this time. I thought the humor was a little weak in the last Madea movie Madea Goes to Jail (though still recommended), but it was solid in I Can Do Bad. The one who stole the show was a young actress named Hope Olaide Wilson. That girl acted the heck out of that movie. Her performance alone is worth a ticket. You can see a clip HERE. (Warning: one cuss word)

I’ll see you Wednesday where I show off my pics from the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes. And no more cats on roof tops. I promise.

JEN

Psyched to see Tyler Perry’s new movie. Also, the kitten, made me squeel out loud. Which woke up my dog. She made this weird huffing sound and went back to sleep. She’s getting used to the crazy …. I already have your book (and LOVED IT) but my favorite cartoon was probably She-Ra. I also liked Popples. Sometimes when I think I’m about to have a real bonding moment with another child of the 80′s I say, “And did you pull your t-shirt over your knees and try to hop around like a Popple?!” And they look at me like I have two heads. I leave that bit out of conversations now. Kanye was a jerk last night. Taylor is awesome though.

  2. Katie Patchell September 14th, 2009 3:46 pm

Blue’s Clues was my ultimate favorite!!!!!!!! I mean, who could resist that cute little face????? Please sign me up for the contest! -GirlforChrist203

  3. Courtney September 14th, 2009 3:47 pm

So, i went to your classroom today. and you weren’t there. My foot is broken…I fell down a waterfall taking my senior pictures…good pics though. I love the kitten. It’s very cute. I have two rescued kittens right now. Molly and Chloe. My favorite cartoon was Kim Possible. Have you ever seen that one? I liked it so much because..well, I wanted to be her. Not the red, flaming hair, or the really lame friend/boyfriend-but not really boyfriend person. But, the whole save the world/have a friend that is only virtual thing, yeah, freakin awesome. I want to be Kim Possible. Haha.

  4. Audra September 14th, 2009 3:47 pm

My favorite cartoon as a kid was a PBS kids cartoon called Sagwa… it was about a Siamese cat. :)

And the whole Kanye/Taylor thing ticked me off too… I felt so sad for her when I saw the clip… but I agree… Beyonce was pretty classy for doing what she did! Glad to hear someone else with my opinion. :)

  5. Sherry September 14th, 2009 3:50 pm

Well I have to say, I am so with you in regards to loving Scooby Doo. My kids now watch it and are enjoying it. Last Night Cartoon Network had a new Scooby Doo Movie, we all curled up and watched it together. Great family entertainment.

  6. Robyn September 14th, 2009 4:02 pm

I don’t need to be entered of course, but I loved Captain Planet! If that show had been on the air longer, maybe global wouldn’t be such a big deal today, ha ha. And Care Bears, I loved it! I can still be caught today occasionally singing the theme song. :)

  7. Tammy September 14th, 2009 4:09 pm

I’m almost done reading your book and I love it :)
But yeah kanya is a jerk. I just got a new kitten her names missy and she likes to wake me up at 3 in the morning…… I love her but a girl has got to have her beauty sleep! Anyways I already have your book but I wanted to say that “as told by Ginger” was probebly my favorite cartoon! I wish they still played it *sigh*

  8. TD September 14th, 2009 4:18 pm

Only 16 episodes in total, but “Hong Kong Phooey” was my favorite. I loved the poetry of Rosemary, the sweetheart of the switchboard and the names of the latest kung fu moves for Henry. Catman Scrothers, the voice for the Hong Kong Phooey, was superb.

  9. Alli September 14th, 2009 4:36 pm

I have to agree with Katie. Blue’s Clues was the best.
Bonus: My favorite song was the ‘mail song’ !!!!
    I can still sing it.

  10. Ray September 14th, 2009 4:45 pm

My fave is Tin Tin – the Belgian cartoon. :)

  11. Melinda Lancaster September 14th, 2009 4:50 pm

My favorite cartoon show was “Fat Albert & and the Cosby Kids.” I enjoyed the friendship between Fat Albert & his friends. Good stuff.

  12. Natasha September 14th, 2009 4:51 pm

All the classic Looney Tunes, because I’m old (although I was born well AFTER the Looney Tunes ceased production). And Rocky and Bullwinkle because of Boris and Natasha. And just because they were funny.

If I lived in Arkansas, I’d probably be on my way to adopt one of those kittens! Such a sweet face!

  13. Veronica Jones-Brown September 14th, 2009 4:52 pm

Tom and Jerry was,and remain, my favorite cartoon. I love watching that small, fragile Jerry out wit Jerry.

  14. jkeller September 14th, 2009 4:52 pm

My favorite cartoon as a kid were the Smurfs.

  15. Glynn September 14th, 2009 4:57 pm

Road Runner was my favorite. I loved watching at all the ways Wile E. Coyote tried to catch the Road Runner — and failed disastrously. And I always wondered about the Acme Company — producer of the explosives, cannons, guns and other contraptions the Coyote used. I thought it was a real company.

  16. Mark September 14th, 2009 5:09 pm

I would have to say that my favorite was also Scooby Doo

  17. Deborah September 14th, 2009 5:18 pm

My favorite cartoon was the flinstones and the smurfs… I loved them both. I collected smurf figurines when I was a kid..
    La. la. la. la. la.
    have a great day.

  18. Paula Patterson September 14th, 2009 9:22 pm

I love HR Pufenstuf. It was not technically a cartoon. It was my all-time fav.

  19. Marcia Porter September 14th, 2009 9:36 pm

Loved Road Runner, though I do admit rooting for poor Wile E. Coyote every once in awhile. Cut the poor guy a break, Beep Beep!

  20. Bella Franco September 15th, 2009 3:22 am

    hi Jenny,
I found ur contest by complete accident on twitter, but that tweet said: “Trust me, u want to win this book!”
    So here I am, lol.

As for my favorite cartoon growing up?
My sibs and I loved watching Captain Planet together!
“Captain Planet, he’s our hero! He’s Gonna Take pollution down to zero!”
We even had the folders of it for school… *blush*

My favorite cartoon when I was a kid was on the show The Banana Splits and it was “The New Adventures of Huck Finn” The show had 3 live actors, set against an animated set with all other characters being animated. It was a show that really helped to spark my imagination. In my mind, I became part of the show as I traveled with Tom, Becky and Huck to far out adventures of thrills and danger. It helped me escape a sometimes lonely childhood.

  22. Debbie F September 15th, 2009 8:13 am

I favorite cartoon was Bugs Bunny! And Tom & Jerry! Poor Tom! My kids now watch these and I love to curl up with them on the couch and watch.

As for Kanye – well all I can say is Get some help! His ego has got to be huge to think he can get away with the things he does. I was never a fan but now I feel total disgust for that man!

Thanks for the giveaway – oh and how I wish I could have a cat!

  23. redheadkate September 15th, 2009 9:06 am

Fav cartoon as a child – Underdog

I remember watching reruns of this in the mornings before school. He always saved Sweet Polly Purebreed and spoke in rhyme at the same time.

  24. Colene September 15th, 2009 9:14 am

i LOVED Xmen. and Carebears. and my little pony. and scoobydoo. Rocky and Bowinkle. Captain Planet. Bugs Bunny. Smurfs. ThunderCats. SailorMoon. Power Rangers was my all time fav show ever growing up. not a cartoon. just useless fact. ok…thats all i have for right now…

that kitty is awesome! btw. maybe i need to start sticking the kitties that need homes on roofs…
    happy week!

  25. Carra September 15th, 2009 9:37 am

It was always hard to pick a favorite. I usually ended up rotating between Darkwing Duck (let’s get dangerous!), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles(cowabunga, dude), Animaniacs (gotta love Pinky and the Brain), and X-Men (Hel-lo, Gambit!).

    Love the Obama/Kanye clip. Hilarious!

  26. Salle September 15th, 2009 10:14 am

OK…so i loved the WUZZLES…especially the hippo ballarina! But i also liked Scooby, almost more now as an adult, because there is really a LOT of adult humor….Like when shaggy gets out of the van and smoke comes out with him..lol…i always thought it was just a smoke machine and they were having like a disco party in the back…NOW I KNow..oh and WHY he was sooo hungry ALL the time…lol
    CLASSIC!

  27. Paris September 15th, 2009 10:17 am

My favorite cartoon was probably “Tom & Jerry” (Jerry was my fav plus I have an uncle named Jerry sooo…:)

    paris

  28. Sandi Greene September 15th, 2009 10:17 am

You forgot one of the best parts of the VMAs….the “New Moon” trailer! It was awesome! I think it looks better than the first one :) ))

    Sandi

  29. Amy N September 15th, 2009 11:42 am

I absolutely loved The Jetsons when I was little. And I still do! There’s definitely a part of me that thinks owning a robot would be the most awesome thing in the world.

Also, I felt so sorry for Taylor Swift at the VMAs. It was her first time ever getting an award there, and that was just completely awkward and sad.

  30. Jenny B. Jones September 15th, 2009 1:51 pm

Natalie, is that seriously not the cutest animal face you’ve ever seen? Cuter than a Popple!!!

Katie and Alli, Blue’s Clues was great. I was sad when guy No. 1 left.

Courtney, I’m so sorry I missed you! Please come by again. And I’m so sorry you feel. Please never get senior pictures again. When you’re my age you look at those pics and think, “Those are evil!” You will have double the reason…

Audra, the Siamese cat–I remember that cat. Very dignified cartoon!

    Sherry, Scooby is the best!

Robyn, Captain Planet–so ahead of his time! Al Gore would be proud of him.

Tammy, glad you’re liking Just Between You and Me. You need to have a talk with Missy though. No more early wake-ups.

TD, Hong Kong Phooey only had 16 episodes. I did not know that. I loved that guy. And Capt. Caveman. Do you remember him?

Ray-Glad Belgian cartoons were good too!

Melinda, I loved Fat Albert. Hey, hey, hey!
Natasha, Looney Tunes were great. My favorites were when the “artist” would alter the scene or erase parts of Bugs. Or when they’d do old Hollywood and cartoonize old actors like Clark Gable.

Paris and Veronica, When I was little I loved it best when Tom and Jerry got along. I just hate strife. ; )

Glynn, don’t you wish Acme WAS real?!

Amy, I loved the Jetsons too. A robot like that would be awesome. Mine would never rest.

Sandi, I MEANT to post that darn trailer! It really was good.

Mark, Scooby rocks. But NOOOO Scrappy!

Deborah, I totally had a big stuffed Smurf. Which I never played with. I think his blueness scared my dolls.

Paula, Pufenstuf was good. But different.

Marcia, my nephew went through this Road Runner phase–watched it all the time. He was probably about 4 or 5. One day during a MARATHON of the show, he turns around and says, “Do you think Wylie Coyote will ever get the Road Runner?” I said, “I don’t know.” But I was so burned out on the show, I WANTED to say, “No. No he won’t. Not ever.” ha.

Nancy, very cool pick. I love that type of stuff too.

Debbie F, I wish you have a cat too–three of them!

Readheadkate, Underdog was great. You can’t go wrong with a dog. Who’s a hero.

Colene, I had a My Little Pony! And don’t go near those kitties. You KNOW the Universal Law of Colene and Cats will kick in, and they will become magnetically attached to you at first sight and you’ll have to find homes for them. On second thought…stop by.

Carra, Darkwing Duck! I had forgotten about that guy!

Salle, Wuzzles? What the wuzzle is that? And I totally didn’t catch those Scooby details…Must check for them.

    Nancy

  31. Jennifer September 15th, 2009 2:53 pm

    Definitely Garfield!

  32. Robin Schick September 15th, 2009 2:53 pm

I like Charlie Brown. When I was younger and now. They are so good.

I just read a review of your new book on a simple walk blog and You sound like you are so much fun to be around.
I can’t wait to read “Just between you and me”

  33. karen k September 15th, 2009 3:19 pm

My favourite cartoon was hands down…the Jetsons.

    great question.

  34. Vicki September 15th, 2009 6:29 pm

I liked the Smurfs the best!!!!

    lelou2 AT ymail DOT com

    I love Tyler Perrry
    Love the kitty
Kayne West need to straighten up!!! Quick!!!

  35. Bethany September 15th, 2009 8:01 pm

I’m not a cat person, but that one is adorable.

The best cartoon ever was Darkwing Duck: When there’s trouble you call DW.

  36. abby September 15th, 2009 8:46 pm

OHHHH!! That cat was soooo adorable!
My favorite would probably be Garfield. I like that even though he is a very lazy cat he still loves Jon and even likes odie! I also have a cat that is orange and fat like Garfield. I still love him though! :D

  37. Lady Araujo September 15th, 2009 9:59 pm

My favorites cartoons were Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Pluto but I used to watch flinstones too.
I loved Donald Duck so much because of his mood.He was too fun and I used to laugh all the time. =O) Good memories.

Oh, that cat is so cute!

Kanye West was so rude but he wasn’t waiting for the Girl Power. Taylor Swift and Beyonce = that’s a class act.

  38. TD September 16th, 2009 4:41 am

Zowie! Of course, I remember Captain Caveman, the way I act and look before coffee each morning (though I’m a bit taller). Seems like a guy’s dream world is to be a caveman-esque grouch and still have three women following him around to help him manage life.

  39. hannah September 16th, 2009 11:38 am

charlie brown. charlie is so lonely and its sad. and snoopy is an awsome dog. just an awsome classic cartoon.

  40. Robin September 16th, 2009 12:26 pm

How can you resist that sweet little kitty face? Can we get a kitty update?

  41. Charity Wilt September 16th, 2009 2:48 pm

I’d have to agree with you, Scooby Doo…

  42. Amy September 16th, 2009 9:49 pm

I was all about “She-Ra: Princess of Power,” “Rainbow Brite,” and “My Little Ponies.” (They made those cartoon movies for the ponies!)

I missed the kitten pics somehow. You totally need another cat!

  43. Perryd September 17th, 2009 9:29 am

I, too, loved Scooby Doo, but my favorite was Underdog. It came on right after school. How can you resist Sweet Polly Purebred and the intermittent cartoons of Go-Go Gophers & Tennessee Tuxedo in between the Underdog plot line?

  44. Sherry September 17th, 2009 4:38 pm

My favorite cartoon was definitely Scooby Doo! I still watch it when I can.

I’m fairly new to Christian Fiction, so I’m beyond excited to find another author to read. Your current book is on my must read list!

Kittens, aren’t they adorable? I’d have a houseful if I could. We have one cat, Jasmine, whom I rescued from a shelter ten years ago. I also take care of most of the strays in the area.

    God Bless!

  45. Cassidy September 17th, 2009 10:45 pm

Awwwww! Those kittys are so cute! I love kittys! LoL sorry. Get all mushy and stuff when it comes to animals. I really really want your book sooo please please please enter me! My favorite cartoon when I was little was Powerpuff Girls. They were awesome! : )

  46. KiddMarta26 April 21st, 2010 4:28 pm
