Please, My Lady, Don’t Rap

Can you believe October is halfway over? What the heck is happening? I think I'm gonna blame this on Global Warming.  The melting polar ice caps are speeding up time.

I really appreciate all the input on the cover for So Over My Head, the third book in A Charmed Life series. We love hearing what you like and don't like. It's so helpful. It's so subjective sometimes though, isn't it? For example, I thought the covers for the Twilight series were so understated, simplistic and boring. My editor Jamie thought they were symbolic, beautiful, and very clever.

Are there any covers you really like? I like the Harry Potter covers.  I love most of Melissa de Los Santos book covers. They make me want to pick up the book so badly–even though she's really not my style. So I don't pick them up.  But her Love Walked In cover is just beautiful. Which made me read that particular book. Well, most of it. And of course I've already mentioned I love the Pride and Prejudice and Zombies cover. Who WOULDN'T  be attracted to that? And in Christian fiction, I think Cathy Marie Hake gets some of the cutest covers. This one is my favorite.  Of course I think my own publisher, Thomas Nelson, does a fabulous job. My favorite of theirs has to be Denise Hunter's The Convenient Groom.  I can't really think of any YA books that knock my socks off right now. They all pretty much look like variations on the Twilight cover. (Speaking of Pride and Prej and Zombies, you know Little Women and Werewolves is the next fun classical abomination coming, right? Jo March will never be the same.)  So let me know if you have any book covers that you love.

So my friend Susie (names changed to protect the innocent) is on match.com. Look at this email she got last week. (with her included response)

Subject:  Hay

When I asked her if could share that on the blog, she passed along this gem as well. This man's profile picture included full ethnic wear head to toe. Our first clue that there was a slight chance he wasn't an American citizen. And clue number two…

WHEN TIME COMES FOR YOU TO GIVE YOUR HEART TO SOMEONE MAKE SURE YOU SELECT SOMEONE WHO WILL NEVER BREAK YOUR HEART ,,,, BECAUSE BROKEN HEARTS HAS NEVER SPARE PARTS

Hello by lady…smooth words, dude. Smooth words. Though not as good as “broken hearts has never spare parts.”  Cherry on top. And yes, we're pretty sure the different font indicates a copy paste strategy of love. for Mr. Please Lady Give Me One Chance.

I know this has been around for quite a while now, but for some reason I'm just now watching it. Check out this YouTube clip of the guy doing a Michael Jackson medley A Capella. UH. MAZING. I could listen to this all day long.

Isn't he so good?

Speaking of musical excellence, I'm betting you've already seen Miley's Cyrus's swan song from Twitter, a sentiment she chose to express by using the medium of her specialty. Hillbilly Hoedown? Nope. Electronically altered high notes? Nope. Rap? Yep.

What is there to say about that? Nothing. Nothing at all. Jimmy Fallon also did a spoof/Billy Cyrus version. I won't post it, but I thought it was much better.

I hope you have a superbly awesome weekend. I am watching my little nephew play football (in 35 degree weather and in my new t-shirt with his name on it which will be completely covered by a dang coat) and seeking out a craft fair so I can get some Kettle Korn. The real kind. Like pioneers made it. And pilgrims.

My favorite book cover as of right now would have to be the book I just finished reading…Graceling by Kristin Cashore…cool cover…good read.

Ooh, I love Marisa de Los Santos’ books. Her sarcasm and wit are great, though all her classic movie references are a little tough to keep up with. The covers are definitely beautiful, very intriguing.

I thought that rap was cute and age-appropriate, which one can’t always say about Ms. Cyrus. *sigh*

Haha. So will “Susie” be replying to either of those people? I’m thinking the second one. He’s clearly put in a lot of effort.

Have a good weekend!

I’d just like to comment on the Susie situation::

Susie, how could you let a winner like that slip through your fingers? Maybe his English isn’t so good (OK, it’s terrible, but I’ve heard worse–from Americans!) Maybe he’s a little persistent–we like the chase, right? (you know how to get a restraining order, right?) Maybe he’s a little young, but at least you still go it (oh dear…this isn’t “Cougartown”…) Anyway, Susie, there are more fish in the sea–what that has to do with finding a date, I’ll never know. Unless, of course, you want to date a fisherman, then by all means, heading to good fishing spots would be the way to go!

Best wishes to you, Susie, in finding the love of your life! I’m your single sistah!

My favorites covers are Love’s Rescue by Tammy Barley and Coming Attractions by Robin Jones Gunn.
But I like Just Between You and Me too. I have to confess, I always judge the book by its cover. lol
Well, I’m brazilian… that means my mother language is portuguese but I’m glad to know my English is not so bad like I thought it was.

I love Cathy Marie Hake’s covers, too! But my favorite of all her covers would have to be Bittersweet. The girl on the cover looks so cute and charming with her lacey umbrella and long, poufy dress, and I just love that random piglet hiding behind her skirt.

I think the best cover ever is The Order of Odd Fish by James Kennedy. It’s so delightfully random. I even sketched it for art class and got a 100!

Ugh, I commented Friday, but it’s gone. My computer hates me.

Sarah, I think Cathy and I are starting a pig on the cover trend. I hope it catches on.

Marta, your English is great. And those are two fun covers.

Siri, I just sorta finished Graceling. I didn’t like the book, but I do like the cover. But interesting that it’s about a girl, but not a feminine cover at all.

Robyn, she has the best covers. I could just frame them.

Sarah, the rap was age appropriate. And her clothing–unlike her clothing in the video for Party in the USA. More like Cleavage in the USA.

Paris, the coffee motif is always fun.

Kristy, there’s just something not attractive about sea monsters to me. Though I have dated a few.

Amy, ha. You tell her! Susie needs to get right with the Lord and give those two guys a chance. Clearly they are Grade A gents.

Carli, I looked that book up (hadn’t heard of it), and it does have a very fun cover! Unique and interesting.

Did she say… squeezin’ my pimples? I don’t know….

That was lovely. I want a man who can sweet talk me like that!!!

Um. I have something to send you.
Just for kicks and giggles. If ya wanna.

P.S. Favorite cover = Captivating.
Even if the actual book was terribly written and cheesy (which it isn’t) the cover would still be lovely.
